It's Christmas Time!12/12/2019 As 2019 draws to a close, with our charity events and Christmas High Tea, life at Lisle Combe continues in it's own little way! After a very busy season of Bed and Breakfast guests it's good to spend time organising our charity events. The Masquerade Casino Evening was a great success, raising over £700 for Ventnor Cricket Club, our guests loved the excitement of the Roulette Wheel and Black Jack tables. We also held a 'Black Friday' coffee morning and pop up shop which we are delighted to say raised just over £160 for the Mountbatten Hospice. December saw our first ever Christmas High Teas, hours spent decorating the house with greenery from the garden, gave a traditional festive feel to Lisle Combe. Cakes cooked and in the freezer, we can now make scones blindfolded!! Guests arrived with empty stomachs ready to munch on sandwiches, scones and clotted cream and a selection of cakes. After a glass of fizzy and plenty of chatter, happy guests left with a doggie bag of cakes for later! 2020 starts with our now established 'Breakfast Week' at the end of January and a 'pop up' pub to welcome in the New Year. Home of a Poet!3/4/2019 Did you know that Alfred Noyes lived at Lisle Combe? He brought this beautiful house, with his second wife, Mary Angela, in 1929 and lived here until he died in 1958.
Famous for his narrative poem The Highwayman (1906), Alfred Noyes played an important role in shaping the Twentieth century. At Lisle Combe there is plenty of evidence of his life on the Isle of Wight and beyond. Living history, as you are surrounded by memoirs if his life, it's a step back in time! Just the smell as you walk through the front door, read the letters, see the paintings - they all transport you to a time of life after the second World War and the rebuild to future optimism (read 'No Other Man' a great reflection of this time). Now the third generation to live at Lisle Combe, the Noyes family welcome people to stay at the home of a distinguished poet and author, and experience a little bit of the magic......... " There's a magic in the distance, where the sea-line meets the sky" form Forty Singing Seamen by Alfred Noyes.
