About Lisle Combe

In the Noyes family, since 1929, Lisle Combe is a family run Bed and Breakfast, owned and managed by husband and wife team, Robert and Ruth Noyes.  It is situated on the southern side of the Isle of Wight, in a picturesque haven, with uninterrupted views over the English Channel.

Stay at the home of the famous British poet, Alfred Noyes, witness his extensive library and chattels of a time gone bye. The house is Listed and retains many original features - leaded windows, tall twisted Tudor style chimney pots - in the beautiful 'Cottage Orne' style. Extensive gardens to explore and close access to the unique St Lawrence coastal path and small rocky beaches.

The peacefulness of the surroundings create an atmosphere which can inspire all of us. Essentially a retreat from the hustle and bustle of working life, Lisle Combe is the ideal place to stay, to restore the mind, body and soul.
Take a break from your daily life at Lisle Combe.
Time to talk,
Time to think,
Time to breathe.

" Quintessentially English and beautiful gardens and bird-song in the morning "
Victoria Gardnier, Perth, Western Australia

We cater for couples, families, solo travellers and groups.
Come and reconnect, and recharge, surrounded by our stunning scenery, as well as all the local wildlife, including the island's famous red squirrels who scamper through the garden. There is easy access to charming coastal walks, rocky chines and coves where in days gone past smugglers, and maybe even modern day pirates, were known to frequent.

As a family run business, we at Lisle Combe understand the importance of an enjoyable and stress free break. We will do our very best to make your stay the very best experience it can be. In addition, we can also accommodate larger family groups, host special events, and can hold small wedding receptions.

So please continue to explore our website, and we look forward to you visiting soon.

A brief History

Lisle Combe is steeped in history. It was originally two "cottages" but is now linked by a fabulous staircase within the large hallway.

It was built in 1815 by the first Earl of Yarborough, Charles Anderson Pelham, founder member of the Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes. Yarborough wanted his second son, Captain Dudley Pelham to have a country retreat at his disposal. Captain Pelham, the famous sea captain and his wife, soon settled into life away from the Navy at Lisle Combe or Captain Pelham's Cottage as it was first named.

Alfred Noyes (Robert's grandfather) and his second wife Mary, moved to Lisle Combe in 1929 for the autumn years of his life. Alfred died in 1958 and was a famous author and poet, probably best known for his children's poetry. Most famously he penned 'The Highwayman', studied by many a school child, and noted for the rhythmic pattern of the galloping horse. In his later years, with failing eyesight, Alfred Noyes wrote about his beloved gardens and surroundings in the novel 'Orchard Bay'. He also makes numerous references to his life at Lisle Combe in his autobiography, 'Two Worlds for Memory'.

Location

Lisle Combe is situated near the southern most point of the Isle of Wight, within the quiet village of St Lawrence. As part of the ever changing Undercliff area St Lawrence is a mix of old and new properties, some properties like Lisle Combe are steeped in centuries of history. Due to our location we have no mobile reception in the house but limited WiFi is available and guests may use our house phone.
Take the A3055 from Ventnor towards Niton and the Undercliff. Drive past the Botanical Gardens on the left (well worth a visit) and enter the village of St Lawrence (there is a village sign on your right). Follow the road past a right hand turn (Inglewood Park) and then turn left into our driveway, opposite woodland to your right (Pelham Woods)

Five minutes walk from the house finds you on the Island's coastal path. Immediately in front of Lisle Combe there are two rocky beaches, Battery Bay and Orchard Bay. Both secluded beaches are ideal spots for rock pooling at low tide and at certain times are covered in sand/shingle. The landscape of the beach is constantly changing, dependent on the tides and wind direction.

Turn left along the path and you head towards the Botanical Gardens, renown for its' exotic plants and shrubs, wonderful walkways and picnic spots. Beyond the gardens is the Ventnor Cricket ground set in an unique environment - seeing is believing with this cricketers dream ground! Walking towards Ventnor will bring you to the famous Steephill Cove, where crab pasties and ice creams are the order of the day!
Back at Lisle Combe, turning right along the coastal path takes you towards the St Catherine's light house, although unfortunately you can not get that far due to the changing landscape (landslides). There are more beaches to explore and wonderful AONB scenery to immerse your self, this is a most beautiful part of the Island's coastline.
On the farm we also have a selection of self catering accommodation available at Bank End Farm
